In 2001, an independent pharmacy found elevated levels of a cancer-causing chemical called benzene in several sunscreen brands, including Neutrogena and Banana Boat. Out of nearly 300 different sunscreens tested, 27% contained benzene. In 2022, the multi-district litigation court granted preliminary approval of a nationwide class action settlement in the Neutrogena litigation. A nationwide class action suit has also been filed against Banana Boat.

What is Benzene?

Benzene is a chemical that is a colorless or light yellow liquid at room temperature. It has a sweet odor and is highly flammable.

Benzene evaporates into the air very quickly. Its vapor is heavier than air and may sink into low-lying areas.

Benzene dissolves only slightly in water and will float on top of water.
